Batik is an ancient and unique hand-painted dyeing art of ethnic minorities in southwest China. It originated in the Qin and Han Dynasties and became popular in the Sui and Tang Dynasties (581-907 AD). Batik craftsmanship is mainly popular among the Miao and Bai people in Yunnan.
Batik is a traditional hand-made printing and dyeing technique that uses beeswax as a resist-dye material. The specific operation is to use a wax knife to dip the melted wax liquid into the white cloth to draw geometric patterns or patterns of flowers, birds, insects, fish, etc., and then dye it at low temperature. Folks often use the natural plant dye indigo for indigo dyeing. After repeated counter-dying to achieve a satisfactory blue color, they can then be boiled and dewaxed with water to reveal a clear blue and white pattern. During the dip-dying process, the wax used as a dye resist naturally cracks, and the cloth surface shows a special "ice pattern", making batik particularly attractive.
